A couple weeks ago I spotted the first sign of autumn in the Delft flower shops: chrysanthemums (bolchrysanten) – beautiful flowers that remind me the days are getting shorter….

September is just around the corner.

September!

Just hearing the name of the month sparks emotions and memories.  It marks the end of the “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer” and signals a back-to-school, back-to-work, hustle-bustle rhythm of life. Students, teachers, parents and everyone sensitive to the patterns of life can feel the tide of time shifting.

Our sermon text for this Sunday is Nehemiah Chapter 2 and begins with the words, “in the month of Nisan ….”

For the first hearers of Nehemiah’s Jerusalem restoration report, simply hearing the name of the month – “Nisan” must have triggered vivid memories and powerful emotions.

Nisan is the month for Passover, a solemn feast commemorating the great redemption event of the Hebrew Bible, the exodus. Nisan resonates with a deep surging tide of time. It inaugurates the annual cycle of prescribed Jewish feasts culminating about six months later with the Feast of Tabernacles.

Tabernacles is not just a reminder of Israel’s years of wandering in the wilderness. More importantly it reminds God’s people of the coming, eternal Kingdom of God and the certain promise that the Messiah, the Anointed One will dwell in the midst of His people forever.

Our Summer series on Ezra-Nehemiah concludes this Sunday. It is the end of this season, but not the end of the story….

Last week at Treasure Seekers, the children learned from Abraham’s call that we can trust God, because God keeps his promises.  This week they will see that God’s promises hold despite our doubts.  Please can Explorers kids bring their bibles?

Title: Promise Confirmed

Text: Genesis 15:1-21

Big Idea: Despite Abraham’s doubts, God confirms his promise by cutting a covenant with Abraham.

Aim: To teach that God remains faithful to his promises even when we find it hard to believe that he will do what he has said.
