Highnoon in a Hot Dusty Town

I’m sure everyone has watched an old wild west film or two. Probably more. I know there is a cable television channel in the U.S. that programs nothing but old westerns. It has been a popular genre since motion pictures arrived on the scene, and usually the overall message has been the triumph of good over evil.

Nothing exemplifies that more than the frontier town showdown. You have all seen it. A dusty, deserted one street cow town.  The sheriff on one end of the street and the bad guy on the other. They stare at each other for a moment. Guns are drawn. Shots are fired, and the bad guy crumples to the ground. Good triumphs over evil.

We have all seen it. We know what’s going to happen. But sometimes a typical detail is changed in some way that signals a particular message. I know of one western movie where the sheriff is the one who drops to the ground dead.  Does bad really triumph over good? Or was he really the bad guy?

By now you must be wondering what do western movies have to do with the Bible? I will explain the link this Sunday when we take a deep look at the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4. See you then.

The Lord is Gracious!
