Identity and Community: Being the People of God in a Shattered World
Surely all of us often have the experience of meeting someone for the first time in a church. We all know the usual routine:
What’s your name?
Where do you live?
Where do you come from?
Are you visiting or are you new here?
What do you do for a living? (or here in Delft, what are studying?)
This is so ordinary a part of life that sometimes we may not think about it much. However, in the time and place that we find ourselves, the question of “identity” and what constitutes “community” are hot topics. Closely related to that question is, how does the church respond to what seems to be a deeply shattered and fragmented world?
Our sermon series this summer on the book of Ezra focuses on these issues.
But can a long list of ancient names, places and numbers help us understand our world today? Ezra chapter 2 may sound odd to modern ears, but when we listen carefully, we can find some fascinating insights about who we are as the people of God and what the place of the church is in this world.
Join us this Sunday for Ezra 2 – Identity and Community

TREASURE SEEKERS
This Sunday there will be Treasure Seekers at the ICF Delft service. The Discoverers and Explorers groups will join together. Please can Explorers kids bring their bibles as usual?
From next week (28 July), no Treasure Seekers groups are planned until 11 August. Parents will receive materials for kids to use during the service or at other times. It is possible that some kids activities will be arranged in the services; please watch this space.
Title: The Unbreakable Promise
Text: Jeremiah 33:14-26
Big Idea: Although the Lord judged his people and sent them into exile, he would never break his promise to them – one of David’s descendants would rule God’s people forever.
Aim: To teach that God will never break his promises to his people, no matter how impossible that might seem or how many times we fail.
The memory verse for the ‘Babylonia and Beyond’ series is: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)
