Walls, Gates, and a Bridge
How many bridges are there in the old city of Delft? Maybe one of our architecture students knows the answer. I don’t.
Some years ago there was a local exhibition about Delft’s bridges and I read how many there are, but I do not remember the number. My ambition to learn the names of all of them was a failure. But I do remember the name of the bridge across from the beautiful, stately synagogue: the Lion Bridge. I always think of the Lion of Judah, the Messiah when I walk over that bridge.
In a figurative sense, this week’s sermon will be something of a messianic bridge. The last two years our summer sermon series has been from the book of Ezra-Nehemiah. Last summer we left off with Nehemiah 2 with the walls and gates of Jerusalem in ruins. This coming summer, Lord willing, we will again take up the story in chapter 3 as residents of Jerusalem roll up their sleeves and set their hands to repairing the walls and gates.
In the meantime, Psalm 122, the passage for this week’s sermon, serves as a bridge connecting the walls and gates, and looks forward to the everlasting reign of the Messiah, of the house of David.
In times of trouble, in times of injustice and times of conflict, our help comes from the Lord, Jesus the Messiah.
Let us gather together this Sunday for worship to Him.
