When Eve and Adam had sinned, they had treated God as their enemy. They had joined the Serpent in the first polarisation in this universe. God’s image-bearers had now become his enemies. That could and would not remain without consequences. With sin, death came into the world. In our present world we see and feel the consequences of sin and death everywhere and almost always. Yet, after the Lord had called Adam and Eve and after they had admitted what they had done, the Lord did something amazing. He announced that there would be enmity – but not between him and the woman, but rather between the serpent and the woman. In other words, in an amazing way the Lord declared that he would be the woman’s Friend. That gracious friendship was not only established with her, but also with all whom he would later call to repent and believe.
